In 1999 the territory of Aomin (Macau) previously under the jurisdiction of Portugal became a part of PRC. Aomin got an autonomy including the right to continue issuing its own currency Pataca («pataca» originates from Portuguese name of Mexican silver coin). Banknotes are printed by the Macau branch of Portuguese Banco Nacional Ultramarino (since 1906) and Bank of China (Taiwan) (since 1995); design and size of banknotes are different but the banknotes issued by both banks are equally legal tender in the territory of autonomous district. Banknotes are issued by Monetary Authority of Aomin, as a rule, in equal portions for both banks.

Yuan (PRC) and Dollar (Xianggang (Hong Kong) are freely exchanged in the banks of Aomin (Macau).
