Distictive features of NexGen banknotes of series 2004, 2006, 2009, from series 1996–2006
On banknotes of NexGen series 2004, 2006, 2009 new security elements are used:
- Dry offset – a method of printing combining elements of letterpress and offset printing was applied for producing the US currency notes of NexGen series 2004, 2006 and 2009. Split duct lithography technique (“iris printing”) was used for the series’ banknotes.
- Multi-colored metallography and metallized ink were used for the first time.
- Number of security fibers in paper in comparison with banknotes of series 1996 was increased by 2–4 times
Design and main security features of banknotes of series NexGen 2004, 2006 and 2009
New elements of design include the use of new colors: red, orange, yellow, blue, purple. The security complex of banknotes of NexGen series was improved due to the application of metallized ink and an increased number of security fibers in paper in comparison with the Federal Reserve Notes of 1996–2001 issues. The background (base) guilloche grid on new banknotes possesses elements of split duct lithography.

Dominating colors
They are individual for banknotes of each denomination (vide description in the chapter’s text).
Paper
Has a light-yellow shade, local watermark, a polymer security thread with a text and micro-images, security fibers of red and blue colors.
Methods of printing
Intaglio: face - Using black inks, they executed guilloche frames with the image of denomination; portrait; texts “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”; “THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL
DEBTS , PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ”, a facsimile of signatures of the Treasurer and the Secretary of the Department of the Treasury with the designations of their positions; a text designation of denominations (to the right of the portrait); control letters; numbers of quadrants; numbers of printing plates; years of series issue; letters “FW” (Fort Worth); conventionalized drawings are performed by colored metallic inks (at the bottom, to the right of the portrait); digits of denominations in the lower right corner are executed by optically variable ink (OVI). Back: Using green inks, they executed images of buildings, frames with digital images of denominations and the text: at the top “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “IN GOD WE TRUST ”; at the bottom a text designation of denomination, designation of the printing plate number of the back.
Dry Offset (a combination of elements of letterpress and offset printing): face - background (base) grid with elements of split duct lithography, images and texts (for each denomination individually); anti-scanning marks.
Letterpress: face - Using black ink they executed the seal of the Federal Reserve System, letters and numbers of Federal Reserve Banks (to the left of the portrait); Using green ink they executed the seal of the US Department of the Treasury (to the right of the portrait) and serial numbers.
Microprint
On banknotes of NexGen series micro-texts (vide further in the text a description of denominations security elements) are executed by both intaglio printing and offset printing.
Optically Variable Ink (OVI ink)
Digital designation of $10, $20, $50, $100 denomination in the right lower corner of banknotes face at changing angle of observation changes colors in the following sequence: brown-red – green – blue.
Magnetic security
Black ink of metallographic image of the face of NexGen banknotes contains a ferromagnetic component and due to this possesses magnetic properties. On banknotes of NexGen series 2004, 2006 and 2009 the distribution of ferromagnetic component does not have a local drawing.
IR security
Infrared security is the execution of images of the back by two metameric inks (of one color under ordinary lighting), one of them absorbs the IRrange emission, the other one – does not. As a result certain areas of images of the back turn out to be transparent. These areas form vertical stripes of various width (for each denomination individually).
Feature for visually impaired people
On the back of banknotes of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denomination the denomination figures sizes were increased.
3D security stripe
On the $100 denomination banknote, depending on the tilting angle, the image of the bells changes to the figure “100”.
