$1 Changing Details

29 may 2014

This April, US cash circulation saw first 2013 $1 banknotes signed by the new Treasurer, Jacob Lew, and printed with SOI machines by KBA Giori Inc. The new printing equipment features high output (~10,000 sheets an hour) and 50 banknotes on a printed paper sheet, while older I-10 machines for US note production use paper with 32 banknotes on.

Banknotes printed with the old machines form 4 columns and 8 rows on a sheet, divided into 4 quadrants. Each note's location on a sheet is indicated with an alphanumeric combination (A1 to H4). Sheets printed with SOI machines host 5 banknote columns and 10 rows, each with an alphanumeric index from A1 to J5. As before, these details are placed in the upper left corner on the face.

Besides, on the new notes, the check letter and digit for note location on a sheet have the same height, unlike other issue notes with the check letter higher than the digit.

The new printing machines now equip both banknote works of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing – in Washington, DC and Fort Worth. However, adopting this equipment for all-denom production will most likely take several years. So in the near future, the SOI machines will be printing only $1 notes.
