Lithuania to Become 19th Eurozone Country Since 1 January

29 august 2014

On 23 July 2014, the EU Council approved Lithuania's application to enter the eurozone on 1 January 2015. The Lithuanian Lita (LTL) will be exchanged for EUR at the fixed rate of LTL 3,45280 per €1.

LTL and EUR will be in parallel circulation for 2 weeks (1-14 January 2015) after which (since 16 January) LTL will cease being legal tender.

LTL notes/coins will be exchangable at 330 post offices and some Lithuanian banks till 1 March 2015 at the official rate and without any fee. Some banks will be exchanging till 31 December 2015.

There's no deadline for exchanging LTL notes/coins for EUR at the national central bank's branches. It's a free service at the fixed rate and without amount limitations. LTL will also be exchangable at other eurozone central banks till 28 February 2015. However, the 1-time exchange amount is limited to €1,000.

Production of coins with the national Lithuanian side has already begun. Since 22 August 2014, products/services have been priced in 2 currencies, a practice to be applied till 30 June 2015.

Transition to EUR and national currency exchange will be accompanied by an info campaign of ECB and the Bank of Lithuania (BOL), including distribution of materials on EUR notes/coins, exchange terms, video broadcast with clarifying the new currency's security features, and also a EUR exhibition at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuiаnia in Vilnius.

However, one of the most efficient ways to inform the public of the upcoming currency replacement was BOL's mass texting via major mobile carriers. Messages highlighting EUR adoption reached 2.7M subscribers nationwide after the final EU Council's resolution on Lithuania. The citizens were informed of the currency's set exchange rate, the exchange's starting date, and were also warned against potential counterfeiting. Besides, the message indicated where Lithuanians may address with inquiries about EUR adoption. Another SMS campaign will be this December, right before Lithuania's joining the eurozone. The 2nd message for Lithuanians will contain info on the currency exchange period and institutions exchanging LTL for free.
